Actually, Wildflour Cafe is related to a different restaurant in Roanoke - On the Rise Bakery on Market Street in Downtown Roanoke. The bakery serves some of the best bread in the region and they’re also known for their amazing cookies, cakes, and pastries. Many of these are also available at the cafe at Towers.
Wildflour Cafe has the challenge of being located in a spot where the restaurant isn’t actually visible from the street. There’s a small sign on the side of the Towers building, but the entire restaurant is located in the heart of the building and people don’t even know it’s there unless they venture inside.
If you’re fortunate enough to make your way inside, you’ll find a very good meal waiting for you.
The gordita flatbread was delicious. It was soft and pillowy and had terrific flavor. The only problem was that it was so light and soft that it began to fall apart with the liquid of the pineapple salsa.
The fish was also very good. It was blackened with a generous amount of seasonings that offered a nice amount of spice and the tilapia was flaky and moist. Combined with the citrus flavors of the pineapple and fresh cilantro and onion, and it was an excellent mix of ingredients. The pineapple slaw was my favorite part of this dish. I love citrus salsas and fish mixed together, and I loved that Wildflour Cafe was able to put these together as a special. My only complaint would be that it’s not on the menu more often!
The sweet potato fries were a tasty side and they were served with a very interesting ketchup. I think there was rosemary mixed into the ketchup, which my wife loved, but I wasn’t a fan of. I requested a side of honey mustard for the fries while my wife ate the ketchup, and I was much happier with the mustard as a condiment.
I polished off the tilapia gordita in no time and felt like it was a light, delicious, fresh dinner. Blackened fish with citrus is a winner every time in my book.
Wildflour Cafe gets confused with the other Wildflour in Roanoke, which is a shame. Wildflour Market & Bakery is excellent, but Wildflour Cafe is also good enough to deserve its own recognition.
