Our initial plan was to spend the night Saturday and then use a groupon we purchased a few months ago to go tubing on the James River. Of course, we wake up Sunday morning and it’s about 65 degrees and rainy outside. Considering that we were wearing pants and our rain jackets, we decided it probably wouldn’t be the best idea to go tubing. So, we went to Plan B – hang out at a coffee shop downtown and have brunch!
The White Hart Cafe is an awesome place. It’s the type of cool coffee shop/café/restaurant Roanoke needs. It’s the type of place Mill Mountain Coffee & Tea wishes it could be. It’s the type of place that makes people hate Starbucks and Dunkin Donuts. One side of the shop is a counter where you can order drinks to go and there is bar where you can sit and have a drink or order food. On the other side of the room, there are tables, chairs, couches available for people to sit and have a drink or enjoy a meal. There is also additional space in the back, but I didn’t walk back there to see it. The decorations are great and it really feels like a cozy, coffee shop where people come to just hang out.
The menu at The White Hart Cafe is also awesome. We’d been in a couple times before and Nicole had coffee but we hadn’t ordered food. The brunch menu had a number of good looking options, including breakfast bowls, hash, and French toast. The Chai French Toast was calling my name. It was a plate of chai spiced texas toast that was cooked and covered with a caramel coffee syrup and powdered sugar. It also came with a side of turkey sausage.
My biggest complaint about The White Hart Café is that it is too far away. If there were a place this cool in Roanoke, we would be there all the time. It’s the sort of atmosphere that gives your community a unique vibe and culture. Kudos to them for creating that vibe.
