One of the timeless traditions of sitting around a campfire is roasting marshmallows and making s’mores. I’ve made many s’mores in my day and it’s one of my favorite desserts/snacks.
Unfortunately, you don’t always have access to a campfire and making a giant s’more on a regular basis is pretty ridiculous. Trust me. I’ve tried it. Those looks you get from the rest of your family are looks of shame.
However, the concept of a bite-sized s’more? Not so ridiculous.
Trader Joe’s sells bite-sized campfire s’mores and we recently bought a box to see how they measured up to the real thing. I was skeptical of how these could taste like a real s’more but TJ’s actually manages to pull it off. It’s a small graham cracker square that’s topped with a marshmallow and the entire thing is covered in a hard chocolate.
The marshmallow is soft and the graham cracker is nice and crunchy. The chocolate isn’t as good as a melted Hershey bar in a homemade s’more but it’s not bad either.
As expected, the texture is quite different than what you get with fresh s’mores. There’s no way to create the toasted outside and gooey inside of a marshmallow that’s been held over a fire.
Still, if you’re looking for the flavors of s’mores without all the work and mess of making them, these campfire s’mores from Trader Joe’s are a great alternative. Plus, when you consider they’re bite-sized, you can indulge a little without feeling guilty about it.
