Black Forest Ham
The combination of ham, gruyere, and fig on a panini sounds glorious to me. I love the combination of ham and melted cheese and I figured the fig would create a sweet flavor that would make this a delicious sandwich. The Fresh Market tries to pull it off. I'd give them a C+ for execution.
The ham and gruyere are very good. You can taste the quality of the black forest ham and the toasted bread is very tasty. The dijon mustard also gave the sandwich a spicy element. I think the individual who made my sandwich was heavy-handed with the fig jam as the panini was dripping with fig topping when I tried to pick it up to take a bite. In terms of the figs, less is more.
My other issue is the idea of having lettuce on a panini before you toast it. Once the lettuce sits under the panini press for a couple minutes, it gets hot and begins to shrivel up. It didn't provide any flavor to the sandwich and the texture doesn't do the sandwich any favors either. I think it'd probably be better to just leave the lettuce off all together.
In all, I think The Fresh Market needs to head back to the drawing board with this one.
