Rita's - Blacksburg

Custard's Last Stand

Rita's Custard
Is the whole self-serve frozen yogurt craze over yet?

Please wake me when it is.

I’m tired of froyo. Places are becoming increasingly stingy with samples after having already provided the expectation that you should try a flavor before getting it. Prices are going up but businesses are being shady about it by changing the measurements. And there are just too many places serving the EXACT. SAME. THING.

Sorry, but I’m not impressed that Roanoke has ten different frozen yogurt shops that basically serve the same versions of cake batter, cookies & cream, and red velvet frozen yogurt.

Yep. I’m leaving you, frozen yogurt. I’ve met someone else. She’s so much better. Once other people meet her, they’ll leave you too.

If you haven’t tried frozen custard, you’re really missing out. It can be tough to find because not many places serve it, but if you live in a town with a Rita’s Italian Ice, you’re in luck!

Sadly, Roanoke doesn’t have a Rita’s. It has 3,000 frozen yogurt stores…but no Rita’s. It can join Chili’s, Pei Wei, Jason’s Deli, Moe’s, and Sweet Tomatoes on the list of restaurants Roanoke should get.

However, there is one nearby in Blacksburg!

I’ve written many times before about our numerous trips to Blacksburg and Virginia Tech and we will occasionally stop in to Rita’s for a dessert or snack. The shop is more known for serving Italian ice but I’m much more interested in the soft-serve frozen custard.

You can get vanilla, chocolate, or swirl and I’d recommend any of the three. Vanilla is probably my favorite flavor, which is unusual for me because I almost always prefer chocolate. Because eggs are included in the making of custard, it’s much creamier and richer than regular ice cream. It’s probably also 100 times worse for you but I’ve decided that being healthy is simply overrated.

Rita’s also gives you the option of mixing custard with Italian ice. I think I’ve only done this once but mixing the Cherry ice with the vanilla custard is rather heavenly. Very sweet, but still heavenly.

A small container of custard at Rita’s is about $3.50, so the price is comparable to frozen yogurt or ice cream from other stores.

It’s time to make the change. Be part of the revolution. Say “No!” to the mediocrity that has become self-serve frozen yogurt. See the light. Taste the custard!
