My friends and their families missed the memo. This made for really awkward dinners when I would go to my friends’ houses and their idea of having Italian for dinner meant eating Spaghetti-O’s, Chef Boyardee, or frozen meatballs. I’d just sit there and stare at my plate. Sorry, moms. It’s not my fault no one ever taught you how to cook Italian food.
To this day, I’m still picky when it comes to Italian cuisine. I don’t like most versions of marinara sauce and many restaurants offer pathetic attempts at meatballs.
I wasn’t sure how things would turn out at One Meatball Place in Charlottesville.
The environment at One Meatball Place is great. The restaurant offers patio seating, a bar area, and a few other tables in a really cool dining area that features a lot of exposed brick. I love the combination of hardwood and exposed brick.
I decided to order my food to go so that we could go across the street to Feast! and grab some more food to create a sort-of sampler platter. I figured One Meatball Place could supply the meatballs and sauces while Feast! would provide some bread and cheese.
While you have the option of ordering meatball sandwiches or pasta, I was particularly pleased to have the opportunity to order a la carte meatballs ($2 each). This gave me a chance to try three different kinds of meatballs with three different sauces.
I ordered the beef meatball with traditional marinara sauce, pork meatball with spicy green chili verde sauce, and chicken meatball with pesto sauce.
All three meatballs tasted very good. They were cooked properly and had a nice crust while retaining a soft, juicy interior. I think you can tell a good meatball by its crust and these certainly delivered. As for the sauces, I was a big fan of the pesto and spicy chili verde but I didn’t like the marinara at all.
If I could only recommend one, I think I’d suggest the chicken with pesto. That combination works very well together and all the flavors are authentic and tasty.
The entire thing paired very well with my bread and cheese from Feast! And for this meatball snob, One Meatball Place passes the test.
