Was Nawrocki Right About Cam Newton?
However, Nawrocki was highly critical of Smith in his scouting report and questioned things like his character and work ethic and expressed serious reservations about Smith becoming a successful NFL player.
It's the most critical evaluation that has been given of Smith and it was the second time Nawrocki has received attention for being very negative about a highly regarded African American quarterback coming out of college. The first time was in 2011 when Nawrocki published a scathing evaluation of Cam Newton prior to the draft.
Nawrocki said Newton had an enormous ego and said he would have a difficult time getting along with teammates and staying focused and coachable.
When things are going well and the Panthers are winning and Newton is putting up good numbers, he's all smiles and everyone thinks he can be the NFL's next "elite" quarterback (whatever that means). But when Newton struggled this past season, he complained about being criticized because of his race and threw his teammates under the bus while saying he was doing everything he could possibly do. Newton's idea of putting out a suggestion box for people to leave thoughts on what the Panthers could do was disrespectful to his coaching staff and immature.
Basically, Newton did all the things Nawrocki said he would do.
People don't talk about this but Nawrocki also praised Cam Newton for his physical tools and ability and the way he performs on the biggest stage. Nawrocki's main reservations about him were how well he will be able to handle the mental part of the game.
Looking at Newton's full body of work over the past two seasons, I'd say Nolan Nawrocki was spot on with his evaluation.
It wouldn't surprise me if his report about Geno Smith ends up being just as accurate.
