Score – Georgia: 38 LSU: 17
Remember how Aaron Murray isn’t supposed to play well in big games? Someone clearly keeps forgetting to tell him that.
Murray did whatever he wanted against LSU’s defense in a performance that now has him in the running for the Heisman Trophy. John Chavis clearly committed to stopping the run, holding the Dawgs to only 117 yards rushing, but they had no answer at all for Murray.
The fifth-year senior led the Bulldogs with a performance for the ages, completing 25 of 33 passes for 457 yards and four touchdowns. He completed passes to eight different receivers and led the offense with an unbelievable efficiency. With Murray playing at a level like this, the Dawgs are as good as any team in the country.
LSU struck first with a 45 yard touchdown pass from Zach Mettenberger to Odell Beckham Jr. on the game’s opening drive, but UGA quickly answered with ten straight points. Mettenberger later found Jarvis Landry for a six yard touchdown pass in the 2nd quarter to take a 14-10 lead, but the Dawgs again responded – this time with 28 straight points.
Murray completed touchdown passes in all four quarters to four different receivers and had no trouble picking apart the LSU secondary.
Zach Mettenberger played relatively well in his return to his hometown, throwing for 241 yards and two touchdown passes with no interceptions. Unfortunately, his defense couldn’t do anything to help him and LSU now falls to 2-3 in the simulated season.
Key Performer – Is there any question?
Aaron Murray: 25-30, 457 yards, 4 TDs
Aaron Murray made everyone look good on Saturday. He was consistent with his defensive reads and he put the ball in perfect positions for his receivers. He stayed poised throughout the game and was relentless against the LSU defense. His play also earned him the SEC Player of the Week award on NCAA Football 14.
Georgia now faces a tough challenge on the road against No. 25 Tennessee. Yes, that’s right. Tennessee is ranked in the simulated season! The Vols are 4-1 with their only loss being a 35-31 defeat on the road at Oregon. The Dawgs will try to move to 3-0 in the SEC and bring the folks on Rocky Top back down to earth.
