Score - Georgia: 13 Florida: 10
Take that and your healthy roster, Will Muschamp!
Actually, this game was nothing short of a dumpster fire that hopefully doesn’t reflect Saturday’s game at all, aside from UGA coming out with a win.
Neither team amassed more than 265 yards of total offense and there were five turnovers and 16 penalties called. It was a defensive battle and a game that Florida should be kicking itself over.
The Gators only managed to get to the red zone twice, and they came up empty both times. One possession ended when Jeff Driskel threw an interception in the end zone to Corey Moore. The other possession ended in a missed field goal from 34 yards.
Georgia’s offense didn’t look much better, but the Dawgs were able to convert on both of their red zone trips. Quayvon Hicks barrelled into the end zone for a two yard touchdown run early in the second quarter to give UGA a 7-3 lead, and Marshall Morgan kicked a 27-yard field goal near the end of the third quarter, which ended up being the deciding score of the game.
Both quarterbacks had a miserable afternoon. Jeff Driskel only completed 11-of-27 passes for 180 yards and threw three interceptions, while Aaron Murray was 14-of-29 for 170 yards and two interceptions.
Todd Gurley was also very ineffective in his return, only rushing for 57 yards on 19 carries. However, as I mentioned, he was going against a Florida defense that wasn’t missing any starters, which is hardly accurate for how Saturday’s game will look.
Florida is making a habit of offering highlight reel games for Georgia’s outside linebackers over the past few years. Jordan Jenkins is the latest to have a monster game against the Gators, and he finished the simulation with 10 tackles, including seven tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks. It was great for Jenkins to finally make a major impact on a game.
With the win over the Gators, Georgia is back in the driver seat for a trip to the SEC Championship game. The Dawgs are 6-2 and 5-1 in conference play and ranked No. 8 in the nation. Actually, if Georgia can win the remainder of its games and knock off Alabama in the SEC Championship, they might still have a chance at playing for the BCS title. If only it were that easy in real life.
