In the Mud
Nicole is typically the one in our family who finds the weird food products. But on our most recent trip to TJ Maxx, I came away with my own special purchase – a box of mudpuppies. Prior to finding this box, I had never heard of mudpuppies. I don’t think there’s even anything that is appealing about the name “mudpuppies,” but I was in the mood to try something different and these were in the clearance section for $2.
From the description on the Mississippi Cheese Straw Factory website, mudpuppies are “a divinely chocolate delicacy. Rich chocolate chips swirled into a mouthwatering treat made with sweet cream butter, pure cocoa, fresh-flaked oats and crunchy pecans.” They might be a little heavy on the complimentary adjectives, but that description is pretty accurate. The cookies had a very strong chocolate flavor but you could also taste the pecans and the oats along with the richness of the butter. I’m sure there are recipes out there for making your own mudpuppies, which I can’t imagine being very difficult. These cookies also seem like they’d be good for crushing and using as a topping on other desserts.
I don’t know if I would call it a divine delicacy, but it is a good, sweet snack that offers some portion control if you can keep your fingers out of the box - I wasn’t successful with this part. And finding stuff like this makes shopping much more of an adventure for me.
