On the Homestead
To me, the Creamery is one of the most unique culinary items you can find in the Roanoke Valley. It’s produced with local ingredients and has a special flavor that stands out from the competition.
However, with as much recognition as Homestead Creamery has received, many people don’t realize they serve ice cream and sandwiches at their shop in Burnt Chimney. And as the temperatures in the area begin to warm up with the arrival of summer, the Creamery is a great place to stop for ice cream and some lunch when you’re on your way to Smith Mountain Lake.

We had lunch at the Creamery over the weekend and it was the first time I’d ever ordered food there. I’ve had many scoops of ice cream in the past, and I had a couple more over the weekend, but I was excited to try a sandwich from this charming little shop.
I ordered the “Sassy but Classy” sandwich, which was turkey, cheddar, onions, tomatoes, and chipotle sauce on wheat bread.
I ordered a cup with two scoops – dark chocolate and birthday cake. The dark chocolate was rich and decadent, but the birthday cake was the one that hit it out of the park. It was the perfect flavor of birthday cake and it even had small bits of sprinkles and a chocolate ribbon to make it look like a cake.
Other flavors I’ve had that I also recommend include the apple pie, chocolate, peach, and cherry vanilla.
To be able to sit on a bench in front of this great shop and enjoy some ice cream on a sunny day is one of the special experiences of this area.
Head in and grab a sandwich for lunch but be sure to leave room for some ice cream afterwards. You’ll be glad you did.
