HIT'S Frozen Treats is in a great spot. It's located at the base of Mill Mountain by the Walnut Street Bridge on Walnut Avenue. There's easy access to the Roanoke River and the Greenway and they actually share the building with Underdog Bike Rentals. It'd be easy to go for a walk or bike ride on the Greenway and then stop in for some ice cream. I've thought about it, but I normally just skip the exercise part.
You're also only a five minute drive away from the Roanoke Star & Overlook. You could sit outside on the patio at HIT's and look up at the star, or you could take your ice cream with you and make the short drive up to the star. The best view in town and some homemade ice cream sounds like a winning combination.
The shop is run by a sweet couple who have always been at the shop whenever I've stopped in. They're very friendly and you can tell that they've put a lot of time and work into running this business. All of their flavors are homemade and many of them change on a regular basis. I think they have fun experimenting and seeing what people like.
I ordered two scoops in a cup on my recent visit - one scoop of chocolate peanut butter and one scoop of oreo. The chocolate peanut butter was a rich chocolate ice cream base and then swirls of peanut butter mixed in. I prefer the swirls to the way some places have large chunks of peanut butter in ice cream. It helps create a more balanced flavor.
The oreo ice cream was also very good. Cookies 'n' Cream is usually the same thing as oreo ice cream, but the version at HIT's was a little different. You could tell that more oreos are used in making the ice cream and that there's less vanilla, which is typically the base of any cookies 'n' cream flavor.
And that whole chocolate peanut butter oreo combination thing I had going...that was delicious.
The price wasn't bad either. It was $3.80 (including tax) for two large scoops of homemade ice cream. They also serve the traditional sundaes, milkshakes, and I saw couple folks order banana splits while I was there.
HIT's is only open seasonally as the couple takes the winter off. Makes sense to me since most people aren't in the mood for ice cream when it's 20 degrees out. But while we're in the middle of this rainy summer, homemade ice cream hit's the spot.
