Give Me Five
Five Guys has had mixed results in the Roanoke Valley. They opened a location in Salem a few years ago and it did really well at first, but it was in an odd spot that was very inconvenient for anyone who didn't live in the Salem area and the restaurant eventually closed after a few years of business. Now, they've relocated to Tanglewood Mall in a spot that has been doomed for restaurants over the past decade. To be honest, nearly everything at that mall is doomed.
It would be great if Five Guys could serve as the catalyst that begins to turn things around for the mall that has become nothing more than a walking track for seniors.
I had dinner at this location a few weeks ago and they are certainly doing their part to help the mall improve. The staff was extremely friendly, the restaurant was clean, and the food was very good.
It's not cheap for a burger and fries, but you can't argue with the quality.
To say they're generous with the portions here would be a generous understatement.
The taste of my burger was excellent. The beef was juicy and fresh and I loved being able to get as many toppings as I wanted. The entire thing was very messy, but great burgers usually are. Although people usually fall on one side of the debate over Five Guys and In & Out, I see a lot of similarities between the burgers from both places. High quality ingredients with tons of flavor.
I also ordered a side of cajun fries to go along with my burger. Unlike most restaurants, the fries are made in the restaurant and they have a sign that says where the potatoes are delivered from. Spoiler: it's usually somewhere in Idaho. The cajun seasoning provides a little bit of heat without making the fries overly spicy. I'd prefer the cajun fries from Arby's or Checker's but these still aren't bad.
And in one of the best new developments at Five Guys, this location featured a Coke Freestyle machine. I'm assuming this is probably something that's been added to many of their locations around the country.
The menu at Five Guys is very simple. It's primarily burgers, hot dogs and fries. They only do a few things, but they do them very well.
And hopefully the good work at this location will lead to more good things in the future at the mall.
