It Has to Come Back!
This sandwich was offered on the menu earlier this year but it was only a seasonal special that didn’t last long. It must have returned to the island with Jack, Kate and the rest of the folks from Lost.
I guess the company wanted to give it a trial run to see what the response would be. Well...the people have spoken. Based on popular demand, Firehouse Subs is bringing back the sandwich. The company is saying it will only be offered for a limited time again but I’m wondering if that block of time might keep expanding.
If you’re not familiar with this sandwich, here’s the description from the Firehouse website:
“Steaming hot 12-hour pit-smoked pulled pork, Wisconsin pepper jack cheese, and fresh Hawaiian coleslaw, piled high on toasted King’s Hawaiian bread.”
Here’s my description:
It’s fantastic! It’s one of the few times when a menu description actually matches the flavors you get on the sandwich. The pork is tender and smoky with a hint of spice from the pepper jack cheese and a nice sweetness and crunch from the coleslaw. Add in the soft, toasty, sweet flavor of the King’s Hawaiian bread and you have the makings of an excellent sandwich.
It’s a massive, messy sandwich that is unlike anything else on the Firehouse menu. And that’s not a knock on the rest of the menu - I’ve enjoyed quite a few Hook-and-Ladder and Meatball subs in my time.
But the King’s Hawaiian Pork & Slaw is great for a change of pace. And as long as Firehouse keeps dangling it out there as a “limited time only” special, I’ll have trouble ordering anything else.
The return of the King is definitely a decision I wholeheartedly agree with.
