The Eppie Pen
Eppie’s is a casual restaurant. You order at the counter and then grab a seat at a table and wait for your name to be called. It’s not a particularly big place and I could see them doing a substantial take-out business during busy hours. It wasn’t busy when we went on a Saturday night, but we also didn’t realize we arrived 30 minutes before they closed. Closing at 8:00pm on a Saturday? Seemed odd.
The menu at Eppie’s features a different special for every day of the week and they also offer an assortment of sandwiches and salads.
I gave serious thought to ordering the beef brisket sandwich, which is the Saturday special, but decided otherwise and went with the curry chicken Salad. Quite a shift in direction there, right?
The salad featured two massive scoops of curry chicken salad on top of a bed of mixed greens and tomatoes that were lightly tossed in some sort of dressing. The dressing was sweet and the greens tasted very fresh, which is always the key to any good salad. It was also served with a side of pumpkin bread. This could also be called pumpkin cake and I wouldn’t have argued. It was moist, sweet, and delicious.
The chicken salad was filled with huge chunks of chicken and grapes in a yellow curry. This was the first time I can remember having grapes mixed with any sort of curry and it was surprisingly good. The curry was the strong, primary flavor of the dish, but it wasn’t so overpowering that you couldn’t also taste the chicken, greens, grapes, tomatoes, and dressing.
While it wasn’t necessarily a dish that blew me away with the quality, it was still a meal I was very happy with. I felt like it was relatively healthy and a decent value for the amount of food I got. There really are no complaints. Other than wondering why they haven’t mailed 10 pounds of that pumpkin bread to my house yet?!
The problem is – with so much competition from other very appetizing restaurants in Charlottesville that are also calling my name, I have a feeling it will be quite a while before we make a return trip to Eppie’s.
So much good food. So little time.
