When Life Gives You Lemons, Get a Food Truck
The lemonade shop (I’m tempted to call it a “stand”) is located on Brambleton Avenue near the Roanoke County – Roanoke City line. It’s a small shop but it’s full of character and is usually full of visitors who stop to get their lemonade fix.
I remember many summer nights growing up when my dad and I would go to baseball games together and then leave the stadium early so that we could get over to Deb’s before it closed.
Now, times are changing at Deb’s.
They still serve that iconic frozen lemonade, but now there are opportunities to get it even when you can’t make it over to Brambleton Avenue. If you live in Roanoke, maybe you’ve noticed Deb’s Frozen Lemonade is on the move. They now use a truck that travels around town and sets up shop to sell lemonade.
One of the coolest new events in Roanoke is the Market at the River. The Historic City Market in Downtown Roanoke is one of the best things about the Roanoke Valley. It features tons of local fruits and vegetables from the region and many friendly faces. The only problem is that some people have a hard time getting downtown.
The concept of Market at the River is to have many of the vendors from the Downtown Market come out and set up by the Roanoke River for a few hours on Thursday nights. Along with the farmers, they also feature food trucks.
Deb’s is one of those trucks.
You can stop by Reserve Avenue by the river on Thursday evenings to discover what has made this such popular lemonade for so many years.
It’s different than the frozen lemonade many people are used to. There’s more liquid than the Minute Maid frozen lemonades you get at the grocery store and you drink this one with a straw. However, it’s not entirely liquid. There’s still a frozen element to it and small pieces of lemon that give it texture. There’s plenty of sweetness but not the heavy artificial sugar taste that you get with many lemonades.
A tall glass of lemonade is a very refreshing, summer drink. A large cup of Deb’s frozen lemonade is one of those unique food experiences for Roanoke.
And having it available while you can walk along the greenway by the Roanoke River makes it taste even sweeter.
