New Pizza in 16 West Marketplace
It’s managing to keep its historic feel with the City Market but it finally feels like there’s some new energy in Roanoke.
16 West Marketplace offers a variety of things for people in the area. The marketplace features a fitness center, chiropractor’s office, apartments, coffee shop, art gallery, gourmet food market, and a small restaurant. The restaurant is called Cork and Crust, which represents the two primary items on the menu - pizza and wine.
We recently tried the food from Cork & Crust when I had a Friday night craving for pizza. It was beautiful outside so we ordered a pizza to go, walked over to the market area and found a seat while listening to a band play at First Fridays. We felt like such trendy Roanokers.
The melted mozzarella was light and creamy while there were large chunks of tender, roasted garlic that popped with flavor. Not enough places use fresh mozzarella on a pizza but you can really taste a difference when they do. To go along with those delicious ingredients, the peppers added and onions added a nice sweetness and the basil helped provide some Italian spice. I also liked that it was cooked long enough to have a golden, crispy crust.
For an 8-inch pizza that didn’t have any meat, I was a little surprised at the price. A small rustic pizza is $9 (about $10 with tax) and a large is $14. A small pizza is a nice sized meal for one person but I don’t know if I’d be willing to pay $10 for it on a regular basis.
However, grabbing a pizza from Cork & Crust serves as a nice option for those who might be headed to an event or concert downtown. There are also plenty of places to eat inside 16 West Marketplace.
When you don’t want to get a massive slice from Benny Marconi’s and you don’t want to eat the terrible pizza from Fork in the Market, don’t forget to check out Cork & Crust.
