Biscuits used to be my favorite breakfast item. Actually, it wasn’t just any biscuit. It was chicken biscuits. A piece of fried chicken served on a fresh-baked biscuit was one of the joys of life for this chubby 10-year old, particularly when we’d stop at Hardee’s for chicken biscuits. It was also why I never liked eating breakfast at Cracker Barrel – steak & biscuits but no chicken biscuits?! #Fail.
I’ve tried to resist the chicken biscuit temptation as I’ve grown older because my arteries can’t take the trauma, but I do still enjoy one on occasion. On a recent visit to Chapel Hill, North Carolina, I had the opportunity to try the chicken biscuit from Sunrise Biscuit Kitchen, which is the talk of the town.
Sunrise Biscuit Kitchen is located a couple miles from the heart of Chapel Hill, and it’s nothing more than a little drive-in stand that serves biscuits. Many people swear by these biscuits and I’ve read the line will wrap around the parking lot and out into the street on most Saturday mornings. For a place to have such a reputation, I knew I had to give it a try.
The chicken biscuit was huge, with a large fluffy biscuit topped with a fried chicken breast, cheddar cheese, and a scrambled egg. The cheese had a hard time melting, but I still liked how I could taste the sharpness from the cheddar and that it was strong enough to stand out in each bite. The chicken was also very crispy without being too greasy and didn’t cause the entire sandwich to fall apart.
When making chicken biscuits, it’s a balance to use a biscuit that’s fluffy and light but still strong enough to hold together when combined with a fried chicken breast. The biscuits at Sunrise Biscuit Kitchen pass the test.
The biscuits were big, flaky and buttery, but not overly buttered like I think you occasionally get at Bojangles’. These were true Southern-style biscuits that would be great with any type of meat, jam, or other topping. I also suspect they could hold their own when topped with a couple spoonfuls of sausage gravy.
Biscuits from Sunrise Biscuit Kitchen are a regular part of many people’s most important meal of the day. After my chicken biscuit and cinnamon roll, it was my only meal of the day. They were filling, satisfying and quite delicious.
