My Review of Cafe Du Monde in New Orleans
What I’m about to write is probably sacrilege and I’ll likely be banned from Jackson Square in New Orleans.
I wasn’t impressed with Cafe Du Monde.
I know it’s one of the iconic places of New Orleans and it’s usually the first restaurant people think of when they hear the word “beignet,” but it just didn’t do anything for me.
And compared to Cafe Beignet, Cafe Du Monde REALLY didn’t do anything for me.
I'll see myself out.
We picked up an order of beignets as an afternoon snack during one of our days in New Orleans and I had high expectations. After having great beignets from Cafe Beignet, I figured Cafe Du Monde would set the bar as the gold standard of beignets.
Instead, it was just an experience where it felt like the staff wanted to move people through like cattle and the beignets were nothing special. While most people we came across during our time in the city were friendly and full of character, the people at Cafe Du Monde acted like they didn’t want to be bothered.
Our beignets were small, flat, dark and crunchy. Not what I was hoping for, or wanted.
It could be we just caught Cafe Du Monde at a bad point during the day. Yet, there’s always that chance when you visit a restaurant for the first time. When you’re visiting a city, you rarely have the luxury to visit places multiple times to see if they can get things figured out.
Maybe everyone else knows something I don’t. After all, Cafe Du Monde serves thousands of customers every day.
But based on what I know and tasted, Cafe Du Monde can’t hold a candle to Cafe Beignet.
