Flying South for BBQ
It’s located near Interstate 81 and the Blacksburg/Christiansburg exits as you’re traveling through the New River Valley. It’s about 30 minutes from Roanoke, but well worth it if you’re in the mood for some outstanding BBQ.
The smells of smoked pulled pork, brisket, and chicken filled the air as I stepped out of the car and I had a feeling we’d be in for a great meal. I was right.
I ordered the “The Big Slop” Dinner, which is a jumbo pulled pork sandwich that comes with hushpuppies and three sides. I chose Mac & Cheese, Coleslaw, & Fried Green Tomatoes as my three side dishes.
As for the food, I can understand why Due South is regularly mentioned as one of best BBQ restaurants in Virginia.
The pulled pork was delicious and had fantastic flavor. It was juicy and you could get all the notes that come with the meat being smoked for an extended period of time. My favorite part was that the meat was full of pieces of bark that had cooked along the edge of the shoulder. Those are pure BBQ heaven. You know pulled pork is great when you can eat it without having to add any type of sauce. At Due South, there is no need for sauce.
However, if you’re interested in sauce, they have great variety of flavors, including different tomato and vinegar based sauces. I recommend the Hot Red, which is a tomato based sweet & spicy sauce that was voted the best BBQ sauce in Virginia in 2007.
Along with the pulled pork, the sides were also very good. I loved the hush puppies, which are smaller than what you’ll find at most restaurants, and the fried green tomatoes weren’t overly battered or cooked.
In my opinion, Due South BBQ is everything a BBQ restaurant should be. It’s owned and operated by friendly people who believe in serving outstanding food at a reasonable price and you can see the hard work that goes into the quality of their products. Customers and visitors to the Christiansburg area are lucky to be able to eat at a place like this.
