Finding Doughnuts in Blacksburg
As a college town, Blacksburg has a number of local restaurants that serve some great food that is also cheap. One of those is a small doughnut shop called Carol Lee Donuts. It gets great reviews on Urbanspoon and Yelp so I wanted to see if it lived up to the hype.
It’s located a couple miles away from campus/downtown in a small building on North Main Street. There are tables outside you can sit at but most of the business for Carol Lee Donuts is the take-out variety. They have a self-serve case where people can pick out the doughnuts they want or you can order from behind the counter.
After now having tried all six flavors, the Blueberry Cake & Toasted Coconut are my two favorites. There’s nothing fancy about the blueberry cake, but this cake doughnut is extremely light and the berries tasted stronger than usual in most other blueberry doughnuts I’ve tried.
For a contrast, the Toasted Coconut was a glazed yeast doughnut but topped with shavings of toasted coconut. The coconut gives a unique texture and a sweet nutty flavor that works well with the yeast doughnut. I’m not a coffee drinker but this seemed like a doughnut that would pair perfectly with a cup of coffee.
My past couple experiences of trying doughnuts haven’t worked out particularly well. Doughnut Plant and The Donut Pub are two places I visited in New York City and ended up being disappointments. Finally, I found a doughnut shop that lived up to expectations.
Carol Lee Donuts is worth a visit. And the blueberry cake and toasted coconut doughnuts are absolutely worth a try.
