A Traveling Cafe
Airports are also an opportunity to catch the interest of people who might just be passing through. They might not be able to stay and visit the city right then, but they could be potential visitors at a later date. Smart destinations are recognizing this by incorporating more local elements into their airports. This could mean local art or informative displays or it could mean featuring local restaurants in the food courts and other areas. Give visitors a taste of what your city has to offer even though they might not be able to get out and eat at the restaurants outside the airport.
Atlanta has recognized this by bringing one of the city’s more popular restaurants into the airport with Cafe Intermezzo.
This European style cafe has a couple different locations in the Atlanta area and they are known for having an amazing drink menu and incredible cakes. The location in Concourse B in Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport features both.
While I was traveling recently on business, I picked up a slice of cake. I was unable to eat in the cafe because of scheduling but it was very easy to order from the counter and take it with me.
It featured two layers of chocolate cake sandwiched around a layer of white chocolate mousse with chunks of oreos. The cake was topped with a chocolate icing with small crumbles of oreo pieces. This takes airport dining to another level. The cake was moist and the oreo white chocolate mousse was excellent. I really liked that they used mousse instead of a cream cheese icing or cheesecake layer because the mousse was much lighter. If I were coming up with a different name for it, I’d call it a “Chocolate Cookies & Cream Cake.”
The prices aren’t cheap, but that’s typical for any airport food. I believe slices of cake are around $7.50 and they’re not Duty free!
Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to get a good picture of my cake because of the box it came in and my inability to set it up to where I could get an angle. You’ll just have to take my word for it that it looked good and tasted delicious.
Or, don’t take my word for it. Head down to Atlanta and try it for yourself. And because someone down there is being smart, you could try it in the airport OR at one of their restaurants in the city.
