On the Bubble
Roanoke seems to have two different cupcake shops that are battling for supremacy in the cupcake war in the area and I don’t know if I can pick one over the other. The cupcake war of Roanoke is between Bubblecake and Viva la Cupcake. I’ve met the owners at both shops and they are both extremely passionate about serving great cupcakes and Roanoke is lucky to have both businesses.
And we’re fortunate to have two places that serve products that are different from each other.
I’ve had numerous cupcakes from both places but this review is about Bubblecake.
They have two different locations in the Roanoke Valley and are scheduled to be opening a 3rd location but the main one I usually visit is the original shop in the Crystal Spring neighborhood. It’s a quaint shop in an old house in South Roanoke and the layout is awesome. You can enjoy your cupcakes outside or in the covered sunroom and it’s a great spot for a party for kids.
The HoHo is a moist chocolate cake filled with vanilla cream and topped with vanilla icing and a chocolate drizzle. The cake is light and not too rich and the vanilla cream is sweet but doesn’t have the gel texture you get in the processed cakes. I would describe it as a gourmet version of the hostess cake. I could talk about the other cupcakes at Bubblecake but it doesn’t matter because the HoHo is the one that has a special place in my heart.
Cupcakes at Bubblecake are $3.50 and they also offer certain flavors of smaller cupcakes for $2.25, which are known as Babycakes. I agree with Kevin Malone from The Office in thinking that mini cupcakes sound like the worst idea ever.
A visit to Bubblecake is a great way to spend a summer afternoon in Roanoke. Enjoy the charming Crystal Spring neighborhood, order a Hoho cupcake, find a table outside and don’t forget to save me a seat!
