It was unrealistic to think the Braves could continue at their torrid pace to start the year and it appears the offensive struggles of some of Atlanta’s key hitters caught up with the team. The great start should be considered a surprise considering the way some of the team’s best players are hitting the ball.
Jason Heyward, Dan Uggla, B.J. Upton, and Andrelton Simmons are all currently batting under .200, and this is unacceptable for the offense. These four are expected to be major contributors this season and they must play better in order for the Braves to continue to build on its recent success. If they don’t, it’s likely that Atlanta will have many more series similar to what happened in Pittsburgh this past weekend.
The offense could improve as Freddie Freeman is expected to come off the disabled list and a trip to Coors Field to take on the Rockies is always a good chance to help kick-start a struggling lineup. It should be an exciting series between the two teams that currently have the best record in baseball.
Atlanta’s pitchers have been impressive but the hitting has been streaky. The next step is to begin putting everything together.
