My Review of Blues BBQ in Roanoke
Blues BBQ Co. is one of the most popular barbeque restaurants in the area. It’s located in Market Square in Downtown Roanoke and features one of the more lively bars in town on Friday and Saturday nights.
To many people in the region, Blues offers great BBQ. For a long time, I fell in that category.
Then, I began to try other barbeque from around the Southeast and many great restaurants around the country, and I realized how my standards had been too low. Blues BBQ Co. no longer meets my standard of good ‘que.
In my opinion, there are two critical elements of having great BBQ - smoke and flavor. Whether you’re having chicken, pulled pork, ribs, brisket or anything else, these two concepts should always apply.
There should be some sort of smoky flavor. And the meat should have enough flavor on its own that you don’t have to cover it in sauce. If you can’t taste anything without adding sauce, it’s been done wrong.
I don’t feel like Blues BBQ Co. succeeds in either category.
I’ve tried the pulled pork, chicken, brisket and ribs, and haven’t been impressed, particularly with the pulled pork. I think it’s dry and needs a generous amount of sauce to have any sort of flavor.
It also doesn’t help that Blues BBQ serves the most expensive barbeque in town. $10 for a mediocre pulled pork sandwich is a sign that Roanoke still has a long way to go to become a great city for BBQ.
Once it does, I’ll do my part to be the biggest cheerleader.
