I’m always intrigued by things that are “hot chocolate” flavored because they usually end up tasting just like regular chocolate. Cough. Starbucks Hot Chocolate Ice Cream. Cough.
For the most part, these hot chocolate cupcakes reminded me of a regular chocolate cupcake. However, the cake was very moist and had a lighter, milkier flavor than a typical chocolate cake. I could see how this would be more of a hot chocolate flavor.
I also think the icing is what makes this particular cupcake unique. Instead of a buttercream or cream cheese icing, this mix creates a meringue like icing that reminds me of marshmallow fluff. The creamy marshmallow icing helps make the cupcake really resemble a cup of hot chocolate.
I wouldn’t say this is something that will become a regular on the cupcake menu, but it was a good change-of-pace to go along with all the fun flavors of the holiday season.
