Top 3 Tuesdays - Best Burgers
In terms of burgers in Roanoke, I've yet to find a place that can match the quality and value of Burger in the Square. This Southwest Roanoke County restaurant used to be located in the City Market Building in Downtown Roanoke, but moved to their new location a couple years ago and they have had great success. My favorite thing on the menu is The Dreamer, a burger with bacon, lettuce, tomato, cheese, grilled onions, & grilled mushrooms. The burger has great flavor but the grilled onions and mushrooms are really what helps this one stand apart. Add in a side of waffle fries and you have one of my favorite meals in the Roanoke Valley.
I've written before about the delicious burgers at Fork in the Alley, and nothing has happened since then to change my mind. There are a variety of burgers at the Fork, but my favorite is the F.I.T.A. burger, which is rather classic. This burger is topped with lettuce, tomato, cheese, red onion, and pickles. What makes this one unique to me is the charred flavor the meat gets from cooking on the grill and the bread and butter pickles, which the restaurant gets from a nearby market. It might not sound particularly special from the description, but it delivers on taste.
Allsports Cafe appears to have replaced Burger in the Square as the restaurant in the City Market Building that features burgers. My recommendation for anyone looking for a burger in Downtown Roanoke would be The Magician at Allsports Cafe. This burger comes with lettuce, tomato, bacon, and Tennessee Bourbon barbecue sauce. The toppings are great, but the best part about this sandwich is the bread. Allsports Cafe uses homemade rolls from On the Rise, a local bakery located right across the street from the City Market Building. You forget how much better a sandwich tastes until you have one that features great bread.
As of now, these three are at the top of my list. However, I'm constantly on the look out for finding other restaurants serving burgers that might take the top spot. What are your recommendations for the best burgers where you live?
