|From Ballparks to BBQ||
I spent three years in The Classic City as a student at the University of Georgia. It was one of the most exciting times of my life and I have many great memories from my time there. I met my wife in Athens, drove a bus in Athens, went to court in Athens, got married in Athens, and much more. This city holds a special place in my heart and I always look forward to going back for visits.
For someone considering a visit to Athens, it’s a great place to go for a weekend getaway. It’s a relatively small city with a population of a little over 100,000 but it has a great variety of things to do and an amazing culture. It’s the prototypical college town with UGA being the centerpiece of the city and the historic downtown district being located right across from UGA’s North Campus.
If you want to get more familiar with the authentic Athens experience, spend an afternoon walking around North Campus (one of the most beautiful sections of any college campus in America) and then head across Broad Street and spend a few hours downtown. It’s a wonderful mix of arts, history, entertainment, and great food – all wrapped up in a few blocks. You can find great shopping at Onward Reserve, live music at the Georgia Theatre, and amazing food at Last Resort Grill. While walking around the UGA Campus, take a picture in front of the famed arch, ring the victory bell at the chapel, and grab a seat in front of the fountain at Herty Field.
I’d also be remiss if I didn’t mention the great sporting events you can enjoy at UGA. In the fall, football Saturdays in Athens are hard to describe. It’s an all-day event that includes an incredible tailgating atmosphere and great football in a gorgeous stadium. If you ever get the opportunity to attend a Georgia football game, do it! I also loved going to UGA baseball games at Foley Field and gymnastics meets in Stegeman Coliseum.
Other fun activities include: hanging out in Five Points, visiting the Georgia Botanical Gardens, making your way down Prince Avenue through Bottleworks, and heading over to charming little Watkinsville.
