Eat the Crumbs
Crumbs Blackout Cupcake
I’m always on the hunt for a good cupcake. We try making a variety of cupcakes at home and will occasionally sample some from a grocery store or market, but I get especially excited when we find a bakery or shop that specializes in cupcakes. In our visits to New York City, we’ve seen a number of Crumbs Bake Shop locations and decided to try one on our most recent trip to The Big Apple.
This particular Crumbs is located on E. 8th Street near NYU and Washington Square Park in Manhattan. It’s a small shop with a few places to sit in the shop but most of the business is done by people coming by and getting their cupcakes to go, which is what we did.
The massive cupcakes are in a display case with the prices (around $4.00 each) and calorie range. I’m still trying to block the calorie numbers out of my mind.
There were a ton of intriguing flavors of cupcakes such as the Brownie, Devil’s Food, Squiggle, Elvis, Baba Booey, S’mores, and Milkshake. However, knowing I can never get enough chocolate in a dessert, I ordered the Blackout.

No more cupcake.
According to the description on the Crumbs website, which matches what the girl in the store told me, the Blackout cupcake is “chocolate cake filled with fudge mixed with vanilla custard, topped with chocolate cream cheese frosting and chocolate crumbs drizzled with chocolate.”
It’s basically an experiment to see how many forms of chocolate they can put in one cupcake.
And...it’s awesome.
If you’re thinking, “That’s too much chocolate...” - YOU GET OUT OF HERE!!!!!
The chocolate cake was incredibly moist and the fudge/custard/joyful/divine filling was creamy but not too sweet or heavy. I’m a huge fan of cream cheese icing so I thought the chocolate icing on top was perfect and the chocolate crumbs provided a different texture than the moist cake and gooey filling.
As you can see, I didn’t have any trouble at all finishing it off. I refrained from licking the wrapper because I was in a public place and I didn’t want my wife to be embarrassed.
And that whole calorie thing - those didn’t count because I was on vacation.
